Keeping Yourself Safe From Falling

In these pressing times we all are concerned with our personal safety. For those of us over the age of 65, a simple fall can be detrimental. Further research in fall prevention is desperately needed, but there are some viable options readily available.

Thanks to what we do know on the subject we can narrow down causes of falls to three very broad categories. Each one of these reasons may be the sole cause of a potential fall. In truth there can be several contributing factors, but here are some solutions to some root causes..

Decreased sensation

Have you hands or feet ever have a dull ache? Part of that reason can be due to decreased or loss of sensation to hands, feet, and other parts of the lower extremities. Decreased sense or loss of sensation can indicate some type of neural peripheral damage. If this is a possible concern it is best to contact your physician for further consultation.

Medical doctors utilize diagnostic testing to find the root of many impairments of the nervous system. Doctors can provide a multitude of options appropriate for each patient on an individual basis. But be careful! No medicine is a silver bullet.

Pain medication

At this age you’re no stranger to aches and pains. When pain becomes a hindrance to everyday life medical professionals are capable of prescribing medications that can make a solution worse. Some doctors prescribe medication that can have some pretty bad adverse reactions.

Now your doctor is not the enemy. But if this is something of concern its best to bring this up to your medical provider. Some pharmaceuticals can have adverse reactions, or possible side effects that contribute to some falls. Consult a physician on possibilities like adjust dosages of existing medications or other methods of treatment.

Your environment

Unfortunately the places we consider home can be the contributing to the fall risk. Steps, high curbs, are only a few everyday obstacles some face.We have made leaps and bounds in designing infrastructure to accommodate seniors. But the problem is access. Some seniors are unaware of there options. But assisted living and home health options maybe be one of the move effective ways to prevent a fall.

The world itself can be a difficult place for many people. Home health care is a broad field of services provided in your own home that greatly cuts down the risks of falling. Home health care is usually less expensive, more convenient, and just as effective as care you get in a hospital or skilled nursing facility.
